Exceptional William IV Apothecary Cabinet / Chemist Shop Counter – Circa 1830
A rare and authentic William IV apothecary cabinet and chemist's shop counter dating from around 1830. This remarkable piece is a genuine survivor from a bygone era and showcases the outstanding craftsmanship and practical design of early 19th-century shop fittings.
We acquired this stunning cabinet in Glasgow, where it formed part of the original fittings of an old apothecary and chemist's shop. Rich in history and character, it remains an exceptionally functional and decorative piece.
Constructed in two sections for easier transportation and installation, the cabinet features a removable upper section and lower base. The original glazed front panels remain intact, adding to its authenticity and visual appeal. One of its most fascinating features is the removable rear panel, designed so that medicines and goods could be passed from the dispensary area behind directly through to the shop front.
Inside, each shelf incorporates a clever removable sliding shelf system, allowing stock to be accessed and passed from either the front or the rear of the cabinet—an ingenious design reflecting the working practices of a 19th-century chemist.
This is far more than just a piece of furniture; it is a genuine piece of retail history. Whether used as a statement display cabinet, bookcase, drinks cabinet, collector's showcase, or simply admired as a historic antique, it will become a talking point in any home, shop, restaurant, or commercial interior.
An outstanding and increasingly rare example of early Victorian commercial furniture, offering a unique glimpse into the history of the apothecary trade. A magnificent statement piece that combines history, functionality, and timeless antique charm.
Lovingly cared for with minor signs of age, enhancing its vintage appeal.
