Rare Collectible Lidded Box by Solveig Samhaber for Rosenthal Studio-Line, Germany
This rare lidded porcelain box is part of Rosenthal's ambitious Künstler-Sammeldosen series — a collector’s edition of artist-designed boxes produced under the Studio-Line label. Designed by Solveig Samhaber in the 1980s and limited to 3,000 pieces, this particular model (Nr. 6) exemplifies a postmodern design ethos: dynamic, playful, and unapologetically colourful.
Samhaber was a young and bold design voice when she joined Rosenthal’s circle of collaborating artists. Her work is defined by vivid geometry, Memphis-style graphics, and a desire to elevate functional objects to the level of sculptural art. In addition to this box, she designed Artist Cup No. 31 for the Künstlertasse series and the Vienna espresso cup (City Cup No. 16) in Rosenthal's world city collection — all of them highly sought-after collectibles. Her contribution to Rosenthal sits within a wider design movement of the late 20th century that broke with minimalist orthodoxy, instead embracing ornament, wit, and cultural references.
The manufacturer, Rosenthal, is one of Germany’s most prestigious porcelain producers, founded in 1879 and internationally renowned for uniting craftsmanship with avant-garde design. Its Studio-Line, launched in the 1960s, revolutionised the decorative arts by inviting contemporary artists, architects and designers — from Salvador Dalí to Tapio Wirkkala — to create limited-edition series that blurred the lines between art and object. Solveig Samhaber belongs to this lineage of design radicals who used porcelain as a modern canvas.
This box, with its layered patterns in cobalt, lilac and red, gold detailing, and sculptural crown handle, captures both the joy of the era and the seriousness of its design ambitions.
