This set of five collectible metal Åland chairs was designed by Danish designer Niels Gammelgaard for the Swedish company IKEA in the 1980s. Visually lightweight yet robust, these chairs are crafted from powder-coated black metal. They feature distinctive, contoured seats and backrests made of perforated mesh sheet metal, giving them an industrial, raw character while also providing lightness and comfort. The simple, understated lines of the gently curved steel frame emphasize the furniture's functionality but also reveal the designer's refined approach to form. This is the quintessence of 1980s design - raw yet stylish. The minimalist form, comfortable, contoured seat, and visual lightness make these chairs ideal for loft, modern, and post-industrial interiors, as well as more subdued Japandi or Scandinavian interiors. They are ideal for a dining table, an office, or as a decorative element in a gallery or studio.
Niels Gammelgaard is a Danish industrial designer who has been associated with IKEA since the 1970s. Trained as an architect, he is known for his minimalist approach to form and his love of functional metal structures. He has co-designed many iconic IKEA furniture models, including Moment, Järpen, and the now rare Åland chairs.
IKEA is an international conglomerate of Swedish origin that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture, household appliances and home accessories. Founded in Sweden in 1943 by 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA has been the world's largest furniture retailer since 2008. The company is known for modernist designs of various types of appliances and furniture, and its arrangement works are often associated with ecological simplicity.
The chairs are in original, vintage condition. They show minor signs of use, scuffs, scratches, and a natural patina. The seat height is 44 cm. When folded, the chair is 8 cm deep.
