The iconic Cleopatra bed, designed by Dick Cordemeijer for the Dutch manufacturer Auping in 1953. This piece is a classic example of post-war Dutch modernism. This model combines a light form with functionality and timeless elegance. The structure is crafted from dark powder-coated steel, with distinctive curved sides and perforated metal cladding, providing exceptional breathability and durability. The design is completed by subtle bent teak edge finishes, adding a warm touch to the minimalist silhouette. The Cleopatra's design is the epitome of Mid-Century Modern style. Dick Cordemeijer (1924 - 2018) was a Dutch engineer and designer. He rose to fame thanks to his collaboration with Auping in the 1950s. Cordemeijer embodied a rational, technical approach to design, combining engineering precision with modernist aesthetics. His most famous design, the Cleopatra bed from 1953, became an icon of modern, lightweight furniture, meeting the new living needs of post-war Europe.
Auping is a Dutch manufacturer founded in 1888 by Johannes Auping. The company began by producing metal hospital beds. Over time, Auping became synonymous with innovation, ergonomics, and modern design. The brand became renowned for introducing a metal mesh bed base, ensuring durability and ventilation. In the 1950s and 1960s, Auping collaborated with leading modernist designers, becoming a pillar of Dutch industrial design.
The bed is in original vintage condition. It shows signs of wear and tear due to age. Scratches appear on the wood and metal. One leg is defective – it's not a standard item and requires modification or replacement. The seat height is 26 cm. This offer includes the bed frame only. The mattress must be custom-made and adjusted to your preferences.
