Robert Heal studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London before joining the family business. He made a significant contribution to the design of high-quality modern British furniture, with particular attention paid to the quality of materials and craftsmanship. His best-known creations include the "Recliner" chair and the "Circular" table for Heal's, which have been widely reproduced and have become icons of British design. Robert Heal also taught design at the Royal College of Art in London and was an active member of the British Design Council.
