🎭 Die Geburtstagsfeier (Harold Pinter) – c. 1970 – Original A1 Poster by Frieder Grindler | Tübinger Zimmertheater, Germany
— Domberger screenprint classic
Screenprint | 84 × 59 cm | Germany
🎬 Introduction
Famous german graphic designer Frieder Grindler condenses Pinter’s “comedy of menace” into an unforgettable photomontage: a giant, monochrome snail shell balanced atop stout black boots, their contours edged with hot red–yellow highlights. The hybrid feels both absurd and ominous—retreat and advance at once—mirroring the claustrophobic tension of The Birthday Party. Cool, restrained typography anchors the layout, with credits running along the margins in Swiss-inflected precision.
Commissioned by the Tübinger Zimmertheater and printed by the renowned Domberger Siebdruck workshop, the poster exemplifies late-1960s/early-1970s West German theater graphics: tight grids, halftone textures, and wit over literalism. Production credits to director Wolfgang Kolneder and stage designer H. Jürgen Gerth situate the piece squarely in a progressive regional repertory context, where Grindler cultivated a coherent visual language for contemporary drama.
✨ Why It Matters
This sheet hits a rare convergence of interests: Pinter collectors, German theater historians, and design aficionados value Grindler’s scale-play and the Domberger print quality—crisp halftones, rich inks, and immaculate edges. As part of the Tübinger Zimmertheater program, it helped define a house style that bridged European photomontage traditions with modernist typographic restraint. With limited local display runs typical of repertory theaters, surviving examples in strong condition are sought after and emblematic of the postwar poster renaissance in West Germany.
