Art Deco Hand-Painted Jardinière by C.M. Bergen, Belgium (c. 1920s–1930s)
This exceptional Art Deco jardinière was produced by Céramique Montoise in Mons (Bergen), Belgium, and is marked “C.M. Bergen” on the base. Crafted between the 1920s and 1930s, this hand-painted piece showcases the vibrant, stylized botanical motifs characteristic of the early 20th-century Belgian ceramic movement, closely aligned with the international Art Deco aesthetic.
The vessel features a gracefully undulating form with twin pierced loop handles and a footed base. The surface is richly decorated with rhythmic, flowing foliage in earthy tones of olive, ochre, sienna, and celadon, highlighted with touches of cobalt and violet. These vibrant forms are outlined in dark slip, set against a soft cream background with visible fine crackle glaze — adding depth, age, and texture to the surface.
Its low, oval profile and balanced symmetry make it a striking decorative object, while its function as a jardinière (flower trough) preserves its utilitarian charm. The interior is glazed in a pale buff tone, appropriate for holding water or flower pots.
There is a small chip on the bottom, as shown in the photo.
Historical Note
Céramique Montoise, founded around 1920 in Mons (also known as Bergen in Dutch), was one of Belgium’s notable art pottery studios of the interwar period. Under the creative direction of artisans such as Antoine Dubois and his contemporaries, the studio became known for producing colorful and expressive ceramics that merged traditional handcraftsmanship with the modern flair of the Art Deco movement.
Although often stylistically compared to Dutch Gouda pottery, Céramique Montoise developed its own visual language rooted in Belgian design sensibilities. The studio remained active into the 1940s, and today, its pieces are increasingly sought after by collectors of European Art Deco ceramics.
This jardinière is a beautiful example of Belgian Art Deco ceramic art — equally suited for display or use as a functional vessel in a curated interior.
