A distinctive and architecturally composed studio ceramic vase by Friedhelm Tschentscher, created during the fertile Kassel years of his early career. This sculptural work embodies the reductionist formal language that marked Tschentscher's transition from ceramics toward the concrete and constructivist art for which he later became known.
Rarely encountered on the market, Tschentscher's early ceramics occupy a fascinating position between postwar studio pottery, architectural modernism, and the emerging language of German concrete art.
Design & Form
This tall, almost totemic vase is constructed in two contrasting sections that create a striking visual dialogue.
The lower body consists of a tapering cylindrical vessel in earthy brown stoneware, animated by four matte charcoal-black glazed quadrants positioned rhythmically on the shoulder and lower body. These geometric fields interrupt the calm surface and introduce a serial rhythm that anticipates the reductionist principles of Tschentscher's later sculptural reliefs.
The upper section forms a dramatic, flared conical neck in warm ivory-white, enriched by expressive smoky brown markings and subtle crackling. A pronounced disc collar mediates between the two elements, lending the vessel an almost architectural presence, reminiscent of a ceremonial finial or a modernist column.
The base bears an impressed "F", corresponding to documented early monograms associated with Tschentscher's ceramics from the late 1950s and 1960s.
Attribution & Scholarly Context
This vase corresponds closely to works identified and confirmed by Heidi Kippenberg, who personally knew the artist, and aligns with monogram references documented in Ingrid Vetter's Moderne Keramik des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Its formal vocabulary—reductionist geometry, rhythmic divisions, and matte-gloss contrasts—strongly resonates with the aesthetic explored in the exhibition Kasseler Konzepte – Konkretionen – Konstruktionen (Galerie Hoffmann, 2014), which highlighted Tschentscher's seminal Kassel period.
The piece also anticipates the sculptural direction presented in the retrospective Skulpturen und Reliefs – Rückblick (Kunstportal-Pfalz, 2020), demonstrating the continuity between his early ceramics and his later concrete art.
About the Artist
Friedhelm Tschentscher (born 1930) studied under Professor Walter Popp at the Werkkunstschule Kassel and emerged from the generation that helped rebuild German design culture after 1945.
His early studio pottery reveals the foundations of his lifelong preoccupation with:
