Designer
Victor Vasarely (1906–1997) is widely regarded as the father of Op Art, a movement that explores optical illusion and visual perception through geometric abstraction. Born in Hungary and later active in France, Vasarely developed a visual language based on rhythmic lines, grids, and shifting patterns that create the illusion of movement and spatial vibration.
His collaborations with Rosenthal in the 1970s–1980s brought this artistic vocabulary into the world of porcelain, translating gallery-level optical compositions into collectible design objects.
Manufacturer
Rosenthal Studio-Line was launched in the 1960s as Rosenthal’s avant-garde design program, inviting internationally renowned artists, architects, and designers to reinterpret porcelain as contemporary design. Collaborators included figures such as Tapio Wirkkala, Bjørn Wiinblad, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, and Victor Vasarely.
Studio-Line pieces are highly sought after by collectors due to their combination of artistic authorship and high-quality German porcelain production.
Design Observations
The cylindrical form serves as a canvas for Vasarely’s signature optical language. Thin gold lines create flowing vertical rhythms that subtly distort and bend across the surface, producing the illusion of movement when viewed from different angles.
The compact size and minimalist form allow the graphic decoration to dominate, making the piece both a sculptural object and a miniature artwork.
What for
Ideal for collectors of Rosenthal Studio-Line, Op Art, and postmodern design. The vase works beautifully on a desk, shelf, or small console, perfect for a single flower stem or as a sculptural accent within modern, minimalist, or graphic interiors.
