Ingeborg Zenker & Gerburg Karthausen Studio Ceramic Trio – Sculptural Vessel, Candleholder and Organic Form Object, Germany, 1970s–1980s
An exceptional ensemble of three sculptural studio ceramic works by Ingeborg Zenker and Gerburg Karthausen, among the most distinctive voices of post-war German studio ceramics. Blurring the boundaries between vessel, sculpture, and functional object, this rare group embodies the experimental and highly personal visual language that made the artists' work so recognisable.
United by a rich volcanic olive-green glaze with subtle metallic undertones, the three pieces form a compelling sculptural composition. Their forms appear simultaneously organic and architectural, evoking weathered rock formations, eroded landscapes, abstract botanical structures, or modernist sculpture.
The tallest vessel rises as an expressive vertical construction, its bifurcated opening creating a dramatic silhouette while revealing contrasting ivory-glazed interior surfaces. Beside it, a compact biomorphic vase unfolds through soft undulating volumes, while the third object explores a more open and dynamic form that functions equally as sculptural object or candleholder.
Together they create a dialogue of mass, void, texture, and movement that reflects the experimental spirit of German studio ceramics during the late twentieth century.
About the Artists
Ingeborg Zenker and Gerburg Karthausen developed a distinctive collaborative ceramic practice that combined hand-built techniques, expressive sculptural forms, and richly textured glazes. Their works often occupy the territory between functional ceramics and autonomous sculpture, reflecting broader developments in European studio pottery during the post-war decades.
Design & Aesthetic
Rather than relying on symmetry or traditional vessel forms, these works embrace asymmetry, organic growth, and tactile surfaces. The contrast between dark earthy exteriors and lighter interior passages creates dramatic visual depth, while the hand-worked surfaces preserve the direct presence of the makers.

Collector's Note
Studio ceramics by Ingeborg Zenker and Gerburg Karthausen remain relatively uncommon on the international market. Complete groups preserving multiple related forms are particularly desirable, offering insight into the artists' exploration of sculptural relationships and spatial composition. Displayed together, the three works create a cohesive ceramic installation that is as relevant to contemporary interiors as it is to collectors of European studio pottery.
