D. Meredew Ltd, is a little-known British furniture maker, and was a medium-sized manufacturer in the 1960s and 1970s. They were based in Letchworth Garden City in Hertfordshire. Starting out in London, owner Frederick Hard took some 50 families to the new town of Letchworth in 1914. In 1938 it employed 177 people. Sometime in the 1950s (probably around 1955/57) they hired their first staff designer, a German expatriate named Alphons Loebenstein (then 57 years old) who persuaded the company to follow a route similar to that of competitor G Plan. . And with success! Between 1950 and 1965, turnover increased by a factor of 40. The workforce grew steadily from 150 to about 1500 during the same period. This was the peak of British mid-century furniture production, with small local businesses closing while larger companies They were still a lot smaller than manufacturer G Plan, the leading British makers of modern furniture at the time. From leftover catalogs, suspicion travels that they were similar in size to McIntosh and a tad larger than manufacturer White + Newton. It is remarkable that we rarely come across Meredew furniture these days, unlike furniture from McIntosh, a factory that employed even fewer people. It is suspected that many unbranded products were produced for large retailers, on which they then stuck a logo themselves. Meredew branded furniture is therefore very rare and scarce these days, but this intact chest of drawers is such a rare and typically English item. We see the mark neatly in 1 drawer, and the whole is timelessly sleek and functionally designed and made with great eye for detail and English craftsmanship. There are 3 drawers with so-called blind handles. Everything is executed in a beautiful color veneer. The whole stands on an elegant base with beautiful legs. Although already over 60 years old, the furniture is in a nice vintage condition without major damage to the visible sides, the traces of use and discolouration are appropriate for a piece of furniture of this age and in not very disturbing to our eyes. A rare vintage chest of drawers, functional, timeless and full of character, model "Rowley" is ready to add the next chapter to this beautiful story at your home!
