'Extravagant explosion of colour, in a carefully composed interplay of lines' If you had to put the works of this artist in concise terms, 'explosion of color in a musical interplay of lines' would be the most appropriate. The confrontation with a sculpture or canvas by Van Dommelen evokes a powerful sensation, fed by the paradoxical tension between an almost primitive formal language, clearly referring to age-old artistic expressions in an energetic, vibrant and extremely modern color palette. The artworks of Van Dommelen (1964) The art by Van Dommelen falls into three areas: works on canvas, bas-reliefs and sculptures. Recognizable figures can always be discovered in his work. Graceful female figures and powerful animals (such as the cat, bull or horse) in particular play a prominent role in the artist's artistic vocabulary. Although Van Dommelen's works are clearly figurative, they cannot be characterized as narrative. They are more expressions of strength and vitality than visual representations. It is clear that form and color are of greater importance to Van Dommelen than the image itself. Conversations with Van Dommelen show that the artist's greatest challenge lies in the search for harmony between the interplay of lines and the surface division. After finding the key to this combination, he begins a new search for the right tension between the shape, the texture of the surface and the color of the surfaces. Despite the energetic movements and the bright color palette, a work radiates a great tranquility due to the perfect and harmonious interplay of lines. It is striking that Van Dommelen's works are always framed. In most cases by an actual frame, in other cases by a surface division clearly separated in color and form from the central composition. In my opinion, these frameworks have a function. As such, Van Dommelen creates a world in its own right in his works, separated from ordinary reality by the frame in place and time. In this demarcated reality, Van Dommelen is in charge and his laws apply. In this wonderful world, Van Dommelen composes his eccentric and exotic figures, defined by graceful lines, encased in highly distorted stylizations and unreal colours. It is in this world that Van Dommelen makes fantastic leaps of thought and wonderful associations. Floris van Wanroij M.Phil art historian
