Nice tail of a fish. Ceramic. Less 65 cm wide at the bottom. Sarah Michael was born in Nottinghamshire, England. After school she took an Art Foundation course at Nottingham Polytechnic before choosing textile design. The course she took at the time was at Liverpool Polytechnic, mainly because they specifically asked for students who liked fluorescent pink and it certainly gave her a good grounding in pure Liverpudlian humour! She then left for a yearlong trip through Asia and Australia, where she worked a variety of jobs from designing restaurant uniforms to packaging cake mixes! In Indonesia she met her future husband, who happened to be Dutch and is the reason why she now lives and works in the Netherlands. After realizing that becoming a fashion/textile designer was no longer her purpose in life, she discovered by chance, while taking a pottery course taught by renowned Dutch potter Wim Borst, that potting was the medium she was looking for . She found throwing pots meditative, challenging and exciting. To master throwing, she worked for 4 years as a production thrower in a pottery in Leiden. After that extremely repetitive but educational experience, she started working for herself, determined to make everything as different as possible. It took many years of experimenting with different ideas and techniques before she found the image she was looking for. Throwing is still a passion as all her sculptures are made up of many thrown pieces, cut and assembled to create a three-dimensional canvas that can be covered in a spectrum of colours. If fluorescent pink existed in ceramic body stains, you can count your bottom dollar that Sarah would use it! The female sculptures that Sarah makes are stereotypical images of modern girls. They are trendy, hip, sexy and naughty and often caught in uncompromising situations, such as indulging in a whole box of chocolates and often wearing the wrong shoes! Sarah gets a lot of inspiration just by looking around her and of course at herself. They are made with humor in mind, but also with the necessary stimulating undertone. She likes to use her art to express her feelings and opinions about current events, but with a light-hearted approach, encouraging the viewer to think, but with a smile on their face! Enjoying;-)
