De Utrechtsche Stoel- en Meubelfabriek (UMS) werd 13 april 1913 opgericht in Utrecht. Ondernemer Frits Loeb (1889-1959) verkocht eerst zijn stoelen aan de Ganzenmarkt in Utrecht. UMS groeit hard en wordt een grote fabriek met meubelproductie én verkoop locaties door het hele land. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog verkocht het bedrijf meubelen onder een andere merknaam: PasToe (passe partout). Cees Braakman volgt in die periode zijn vader op als bedrijfsleider en ontwerper. Vanaf het begin maakt Pastoe meubels voor het grote publiek. In de jaren 50 focust Pastoe zich op opbergmeubelen en kasten en later worden ook stoelen geproduceerd. Het uitgangspunt blijft altijd: pure vormgeving en ambachtelijke kwaliteit.
