Product description
Artwork for the Oxford University Rifle Volunteers, circa 1860/70. Beautiful hand painted image including the coat of arms of England with the text Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense. Dieu et mon droit ("God and my right") is the motto of arms of the monarchy of the United Kingdom. The motto appears on the coat of arms of the United Kingdom. Dominus illuminatio mea is the incipit of Psalm 27 and is used as a motto by the University of Oxford. It has been in use there at least since the second half of the sixteenth century and appears on the university's coat of arms. At the very bottom is possibly the name of the firm that made it and where they were located: Chappell Hammond & Co. 274 Regent st. London. It is decorated all around with nails and unfortunately the board has some cracks from drying but otherwise still a high quality decorative piece.
