Cesare (bekend als Joe) Colombo, de design rock star, werd geboren in 1930 in Milaan. Hij was hoofdzakelijk autodidact en volgde een paar jaar de Academie in Brera en vervolgens de faculteit Bouwkunde aan de Politecnico in Milaan. In de jaren 60 was hij zijn tijd ver vooruit en ontwierp hij gewaagde en gedurfde objecten die een sterke optimistische visie vertoonden. Verschillende werken hebben een iconische status bereikt zoals ook de Elda (1963), vernoemd naar zijn vrouw. Deze stoel is ook te vinden in het Louvre en het Museum van Moderne Kunsten in New York én in een aantal James Bond films :-) De schelp van de zetel is gebogen waardoor de zetel een enorm cocoon vormt en is gemaakt uit glasvezel en draait 360° rond.
