This oval-shaped crypt was built in 1855. At that time, death rates were rising due to a cholera epidemic. The people who lie here were too poor to pay for their own plot or monument. The walls are lined with compartments in which the bones of the deceased were stored to find a peaceful resting place.
Traveling and photographing with a fascination for abandoned architecture and faded glory, Jef Peeters seeks and explores lost and forgotten places to be rediscovered. He captures the soul and forgotten stories and turns them into narrative images.
