Mushroom desk lamp # 5015 by W.H. Gispen, 1960s. # Willem Hendrik Gispen (Amsterdam, December 7, 1890 – The Hague, May 10, 1981) was a Dutch industrial designer and entrepreneur. He had his own forge W.H. Gispen & Co in Rotterdam, where he produced traditional arts and crafts with two employees. During his studies at the academy, he had built up a network of architects, from whom he received many commissions, including from Willem Kromhout, Henri Evers, Leendert van der Vlugt and Jan Verheul. In the 1920s, Gispen became increasingly influenced by the design ideas of De Stijl and he switched from traditional to machine production. The Giso lamps designed and produced by him became a resounding success from 1926 onwards. He also started designing and producing tubular steel furniture for offices and homes. The breakthrough for this furniture came in 1929, when Gispen was commissioned to supply the Van Nelle factory with office furniture. # This is a Gispen desk lamp with a white lacquered shade and base. The leg of the lamp is made of chrome-plated tubular steel, as is the round knob on the shade. The predecessor of this classic was already introduced in 1935, but that version had, among other things, 2 pull switches under the hood. This later version (1950s) has been given a pressure switch. This classic was purchased in the early 1960s. • White shade and base. All the original white paint of shade and base. • Electrically 100% OK. • The hood: o Exterior in good condition; see photo of small traces of use o The bottom of the hood is less attractive; that is almost always the case with this type of lamp, because the 2 fittings make scratches when you turn the shade. • Shade and base material: metal. • Hood: diameter of 36 cm; foot diameter of 16 cm. High 40 cm. • The hood can be removed by means of. the round knob with screw thread. • There are 2 fittings under the hood (for more information about Gispen lamps, etc., see the book; Gispen tubular furniture and lighting 1920 – 1940).
