Francesca Zijlstra was born in Harlingen in 1950 and grew up in Laren NH. At a very young age she was busy making sculptures in wood, clay and wax. She was accepted at the Rijksakademie for visual arts by Paul Grégoire. In 1975 and 1977 she won the silver medal of the Prix de Rome. Her exhibition at the Singer Museum in 1978 was an overwhelming success. This was followed by countless exhibitions, up to the present day. She works in wood, stone and bronze. Unruly material is a challenge for her. Her images are archaic, contain eternity value in their expression and masterly execution.
