The Arco floor lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni is ready for close-up: Featured in Hollywood classics such as Diamonds are Forever and The Italian Job, the Arco is a design icon that has been in constant production since its debut in 1962 and is now considered like a design classic. The famed Castiglioni brothers spared no detail when they made it, from the chamfered corners of the genuine Carrera marble base (designed not to hurt if you bump into it) to the strategic hole that allows the base to be lifted easily. The base supports a spun aluminum reflector via a curved stainless steel adjustable stem, allowing the lamp to provide both direct and indirect light. The height can be extended to 220 centimeters, so that a sofa or table can easily be placed underneath. The Castiglioni brothers were inspired for the Arco lamp by something they saw every day: a street lamp. Using commercially available parts, they wanted to design a piece that was technically innovative and visually appealing - a lamp that was functional but one that you didn't have to step around. They topped it off with a marble base, knowing that the same weight would take up less space, allowing the Arco to live in - not take over - the room it lit.
