English: HOPMI chair by Gerrit Rietveld, limited edition, official reproduction. The 'Rietveld HOPMI chair' was designed in 1932 by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. Originally only 2 copies of this design have been made and it was believed both had been lost. Until in 2008 the heir of Professor Lanjouw delivered a bag with steel pipes, screws and pieces of plywood to the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. The museum identified the loose pieces as parts of the missing HOPMI chair. This design by Rietveld forms an important link in Rietveld's tubular steel furniture. The special feature of the chair is the ability for its user to construct the loose sections tube in to a chair themselves by the use of special torpedo nuts. The torpedo nut, which has a right-hand and left-hand screw thread, was a patent of the Hollandsche Patent Metaal Industrie (HOPMI) from Utrecht, hence the name. 2 plywood planks, the seat and backrest, make the chair complete. At the initiative of architect Victor Veldhuijzen van Zanten, a limited edition of only 400 copies were produced, exactly according to the original drawings in the archives of the Centraal Museum and under license from the Rietveld heirs. 150 x series 1 and 250 x series 2. This is number 145/150 of the series 1.
